work at the Center for Social Thinking, Inc.  San Jose, CA)

   A twelve-week program that is adapted from Michelle G. Winner and Stephanie Madrigal’s work at the Center for Social Thinking.  Social Thinking Academy consists of three groups where participants are placed based on their ages and abilities. The Superhero Academy teaches social thinking for children ages 5-12.  Social Detective Agency teaches social cognitive skills to children ages 10-15.  Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking? teaches communication competency to individuals 16 and over.

   Participants learn social relatedness, personal problem solving skills, and self-monitoring skills to develop peer relationships and community independence.  Participants will also learn to relate to others while working together in small groups around a shared interest.

If you have participated in a group within the last year, simply complete this registration form and send it in to the office.

**Please Note: A signed copy of the Group Policy Form is required for all participants.

Group Policy Form

Profile Packet

If this is the first time participating,or you have not attended a group in the last 12 months, you need to complete both the registration form and the Participant's Packet. There are three sections to the Packet: Information on your child; A Demographic Survey; and, an Open Campus Policy and sign a new Groups' Policy Form. Please complete all sections and send in.

Social Group Policy Form

In order to improve communication with families on our Group Policies we are requiring all participants' families to read and sign a Group Policy Form. Please return with your cover sheet if you are a returning participant and with your Packet if you are a new member.

Once complete, mail with a copy of your child's Medicaid Card to the office.

PLEASE NOTE: All sections, including the demographic profile should be completed and sent in with your Registration Form. Incomplete packets will delay your child's participation in groups.

12- week pilot series begins week of March 17, 2008. Full registrations are required. Families are responsible for all related costs. Series Cost $900

Optional Reports

Brief Written Intake Report $150.00

Full Social Thinking Assessment $900.00

(Includes: IEP Meeting 1 hr., 1:1 Participant Interview
2 hrs., 2 hr. School or Community Observation, Parent Interview 1hr., & Full Written report 4 hr.)

 Move and Groove

A social play group designed to teach children the fundamental skills of play: how to play, the function of toys, how to transition, follow schedules, wait, and reciprocal social interactions. This group is designed for children who require intense structure, a small group, and 1:1 attention to promote participation. Children learn how to participate effectively in activities through music and movement. This class is designed for children ages 5-17. Children are grouped based on age and abilities.

 Leaps and Bounds

A play group instructed by trained professionals to teach group dynamics, social rules/expectations, how to engage in shared experiences, and how to foster positive peer relations. The group is visually supported using social stories, schedules, cue cards, physical boundaries and more. Play routines and social interactions will be facilitated and promoted by adults. This group is designed for children ages 5-10.

The Club Jr.

This pre-teen group is designed for children who can effectively communicate basic wants/needs, call attention to others, protest appropriately, and initiate simple conversations. Children will learn to expand their leisure interests and therefore expand their topic interests during conversations. Schedules and various visual supports will enhance the children’s abilities to share thoughts and respond to others’ conversations. This group is for children ages 10-13. Children are grouped according to age and ability.

The Club

The Club is a safe and engaging place for teens to hang out. They become integral members of a group as they discuss and participate in community trips. Participants learn to foster friendships, and learn appropriate social rules for appropriate interactions (interrupting, compromising, negotiating and listening). The participants guide the focus in the groups.  For one group it may be restaurant manners, for others it may be dating. Conversations and leisure interests are enhanced and promoted by facilitators. Participants range in age from 13-19 and will be grouped according to age and abilities.

Creative Expressions

Therapeutic Recreation through visual arts for ages 5-21. Children will learn group dynamics and social rules. They will also be introduced to life leisure skills through creative arts. Scrap booking, jewelry making, and sculpture are just a few of the activities offered.

Karate

Therapeutic recreation through Martial Arts. Children ages

5-21 will learn non-violent Shotokan moves in a visually structured format.  Sessions will focus on participation in a group, self-regulation tools as well as the art of karate.  Children are grouped based on age and abilities.

Yoga

Therapeutic recreation through Yoga. Participants will learn calming and strengthening moves in a visually structured format.  Sessions will focus on participation in a group, self-regulation tools as well as the art of yoga.  Children are grouped based on age and abilities. Yoga takes place at Raffa Studios in Cranston.

Basketball

Therapeutic Recreation through basketball for children ages 8-21.  Participants will learn the skills of playing basketball within a structured format while learning the social skills of sportsmanship and playing as a team.  This class will be held at the Kent County YMCA in Warwick.

Leaps and Bounds Foundations

Un grupo de juego que ha sido diseñado para enseñar a los niños las destrezas fundamentales de jugar como por ejemplo: como jugar, la función de los juguetes,como hacer una transición,seguir una programación o itinerario, esperar e interaccionar socialmente en forma recíproca. Este grupo está diseñado para niños que requieren una estructura intensiva, grupos pequeños y  atención de 1a1 para promover la participación. Los niños aprenden a participar mas efectivamente en grupos o en parejas antes de comenzar a participar mas integramente en Leaps and Bounds. Los niños son de 5 a 15 años y son agrupados de acuerdo a  edades y habilidades.

Leaps and Bounds

Un grupo de juegos, instruído por profesionales debidamente adiestrados a enseñar dinámicas de grupos, reglas sociales, como participar en compartir experiencias y a como fomentar relaciones positivas con sus compañeros. El grupo estará visualmente apoyado usando historias sociales, itinerarios o programas, tarjetas con señales, límites físicos y más. Las rutinas de juegos y las interacciones sociales serán facilitadas y promovidas por adultos. Este grupo esta diseñado para niños de 5 a 10 años de edad.

The Club Jr.

Este es un grupo pre-adolescente que está diseñado para niños que comunican efectivamente sus necesidades básicas, llaman la atención de otros, se manifiestan apropiadamente e inician conversaciones simples. Los niños aprenderán a expandir sus intereses en los ratos libres y por consiguiente aumentarán sus temas de interés mientras  conversan. Programas o itinerarios  y varios apoyos visuales aumentarán la habilidad de los niños a compartir pensamientos y realzar sus habilidades. Este grupo es para niños de 10 a 13 años. Los niños serán agrupados de acuerdo a sus edades y habilidades.

The Club

The Club es un lugar seguro y atractivo para que los adolecentes frecuenten. Ellos se hacen miembros integros de un grupo mientras platican y participan en viajes comunitarios. Los participantes aprenden hacer amistades y aprenden reglas sociales apropiadas para una mejor interración (interrumpir, comprometerse, negociar y escuchar). Los participantes guían su enfoque en grupos. Para un grupo puede ser la manera de comportamiento en un restaurante y para otros como relacionarse. Los facilitadores  del programa promoverán las conversaciones y el tiempo libre.  Los participantes serán agrupados de acuerdo a sus edades y habilidades.
