An Insight into the Journey of

Autism for Grandparents

The Autism Project is sponsoring a support group for grandparents of children with Autism or Asperger Syndrome.  The group will meet the second Monday of every month through December 2010 from 9:30a.m.-11:30a.m. at the Autism Project, 1516 Atwood Ave, Johnston, RI 02919.

Please join us for this unique program that educates grandparents of children with Autism on the characteristics of the disorder and how their grandchildren perceive and relate to the world around them. Participants will also learn how to assist their children and families to help raise and interact with their grandchildren.

The series is a morning group that is a combination of teaching strategies and panel discussions with parents of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger Syndrome. There will also be time each week to talk with other grandparents and program staff to problem solve and leave with strategies to help you increase quality time with your grandchild.  We welcome your participation and look forward to meeting you. Admission is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required by calling Jill Norwood at 401-785-2666 ext. 1011

ASDads

Father Support Group

Autism Spectrum Disorder has had devastating effects upon families.
Recent rates of diagnosis have attempted to bring to the forefront the increasing problem that faces children and families dealing with such disorders. In an effort to address some of these issues, The Autism Project will begin a father support group (“ASDads”) for fathers who have children on the spectrum.

Purpose

The focus of the support group will be to identify areas of concerns that are particular to fathers who have children who are diagnosed with Autism. Some issues that are of concern are:

  • Education of ASD children (IEP etc)
  • Financial Planning (special needs trusts, college, SSI, SSDI etc)
  • Emotional strains on relationships and families
  • Identifying services and resources for fathers

The group will be run and guided by the membership. There will be an attempt to schedule guest speakers and a formatted presentation whenever possible.

The meetings will be held the first Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at The Autism Project located at 1516 Atwood Avenue, Johnston, RI 02919

For more information, please contact The Autism Project at (401) 785-2666. Ask for Sue Baylis, x. 106
