Be preventative

 

Give precise directions

 

Say what you mean, mean what you say!

 

Give extra processing time, about 20-30- seconds

 

Visually inform the child of the expectations

 

Provide visual information to support receptive & expressive communication, even if the child is verbal, provide a back up communication system

 

When dealing with behavior, look at its communication intent

 

Increase visual supports during novel activities, “bad days” & challenging activities

 

Model language

 

When in meltdown,  give space

 

Remember to laugh!

 

Assess the situation when child is exhibiting unwanted behaviors.

 

Assess the following:

Visual Supports

Environmental structure

Sensory stimuli

Expectations

Remember, don’t take the behaviors personally.
