Family Team Building Tips

Forming an Imagine Walk Team is a great way for your family, friends and co-workers to show support for those living with autism.  It is also a great way to give back and help support the Autism Project of RI to continue programs for these individuals.

Team participation is fun and it will bring your family and friends together in a very positive way for a great cause.  It makes people feel good about themselves and the others with whom they are walking.  Of course the number one reason to organize a team for the Imagine Walk is the satisfaction you will receive from knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of so many deserving individuals and their families.

It's Easy to Start a Team!

Step One:   Designate a Team Leader (or captain) and select a team name. The Autism Project of Rhode Island will provide you with brochures.  Get all the brochures you need, you may zerox more. Ask permission to make up signs at work/school.

Step Two: Pre-register   You may pre-register by contacting Mary@theautismproject.org or you may register your team on line, at www.firstgiving.com/autismproject .  Instructions for on-line: Please note-this should only be done once, by the team leader:

Easy Pass Days

  • All REGISTERED Teams should arrange to visit our office to obtain food tickets and drop off donations on one of the following dates: Pre-registration will be available on Tuesday April 15th, Thursday April 17th and Tuesday, April 22nd from 9AM-3PM, Saturday, April 12th from 10AM-1PM and Friday, April 18th from 6-8pm at our office in Cranston.
  • Set a positive example.  Ask your employers and co-workers and/or families to join your team.  Ask your managers if you can send out an email to everyone in your office.

Fundraising Tips

The best way to raise money for your team is through a letter writing campaign. Write a letter explaining your involvement with the Autism Project of RI and how the programs will benefit your children. This is an easy way to raise funds and elevates the uncomfortable face to face solicitation.  If you don’t want to mail letters, you can send out an email.  If your life has been touched by this disorder you will be overwhelmingly surprised by the response this letter will elicit.

Encourage family members and friends to sign up others for your team.

Have t-shirts for your team-that feature the person you are walking for: there are many places to buy them, Job Lot, Michaels, AC Moore, and Joanne Fabrics have inexpensive shirts where you could use an iron on transfer. We also have a list of outside vendors you can purchase t-shirts from. Please contact APRI for a list of vendors.

Organize a meeting place for all your team members to meet at the walk. You may want to make a sign with your team name on it.  Please contact mary@theautismproject.org to obtain a map of the park.

Set a recruitment and fundraising goal.

Have fun and take plenty of pictures.

Get the word out!

Encourage the involvement of your team by utilizing newsletters, e-mail, incentives, PTO involvement and group activities. Put up posters, hand out flyers or send an e-mail.

Be a Part of History

Please submit a photo of your team shirt (or stop by the Autism Table to have a picture taken) which will be included on our Autism Quilt; A Common Thread which will be displayed in 2009.

Post Walk

APRI will send out thank you letters for all donations over $75.00.  If your walkers need letters for their taxes please have them send in checks payable to APRI with the team name clearly designated on the memo line of each check submitted.  This will enable us to accurately determine your total team contribution.  Each team that raises more than $75.00 will also receive a thank you letter from APRI.

You can also send out a personal thank you note or email to your team members, telling them how much you raised.

Submit your team picture for your company newsletter.

The team captain will be notified if your team has earned free training.

Thank you for your support of our organization and your willingness to Imagine.
